1.1 Introduction to Systems of Linear Equations: Class Notes

Definition

A linear equation can be expressed in the form a1x1+a2x2+…+anxn=b where ai are constants, not all zero, and b is a constant.

#14

In each part, use parametric equations to describe the solution set of the linear equation.

a. x+10y=2
b. x1+3x2−12x3=3
c. 4x1+2x2+3x3+x4=20
d. v+w+x−5y+7z=0

Solution

a. Solve for x:

x=−10y+2

The variable y can be anything, so make it the parameter: let t=y. Then

Answer: x=−10t+2y=t

b. Solve for x1:

x1=−3x2+12x3+3

Let s=x2 and t=x3. Then

Answer: x1=−3s+12t+3x2=sx3=t

c. Solve for x1 (divide every term by 4):

x1=−12x2−34x3−14x4+5

Let r=x2, s=x3, and t=x4. Then

Answer: x1=−12r−34s−14t+5x2=rx3=sx4=t

Definition

A parameter (in this context) is a variable that when assigned a value provides a specific solution.

Definitions

A homogeneous linear equation is a linear equation in which b=0.

A system of linear equations is a finite set of linear equations. It has the form

a11x1+a12x2+…+a1nxn=b1a21x1+a22x2+…+a2nxn=b2⋮  ⋮am1x1+am2x2+…+amnxn=bm

Note that the first of the double subscripts references the equation number, and the second references the term in that equation.

Definition

The augmented matrix for the above linear system is

[a11a12⋯a1nb1a21a22⋯a2nb2⋮⋮⋮⋮am1am2⋯amnbm]or[a11a12⋯a1nb1a21a22⋯a2nb2⋮⋮⋮⋮am1am2⋯amnbm]

Each column before the bar holds the coefficients of one unknown: the first column goes with x1, the second with x2, and so on up to xn. The last column holds the constants.

#16

Each linear system has infinitely many solutions. Use parametric equations to describe its solution set.

a.

6x1+2x2=−83x1+x2=−4

b.

2x−y+2z=−46x−3y+6z=−12−4x+2y−4z=8

Solution

a. With elimination, subtracting twice the second equation from the first, E1−2E2, wipes out everything: adding 6x1+2x2=−8 and −6x1−2x2=8 gives 0=0.

The same step on the augmented matrix is R2→R1−2R2:

[62−831−4]⟶[62−8000]

Row 1 is the equation 6x1+2x2=−8, so

x1=−13x2−43

Let t=x2. Then

Answer: x1=−13t−43x2=t

b. The augmented matrix is

[2−12−46−36−12−42−48]

Use R2→R2−3R1 and R3→R3+2R1:

[2−12−400000000]

Only row 1 is left: 2x−y+2z=−4. Solve for x:

x=12y−z−2

Let s=y and t=z. Then

Answer: x=12s−t−2y=sz=t

Definitions

The following are elementary row operations performed on a matrix.

  1. Multiply a row by a nonzero constant.
  2. Interchange two rows.
  3. Add a constant times one row to another.

Definitions

A solution of a linear system is a sequence of n numbers s1, s2, …, sn that when substituted for corresponding unknowns xi makes each equation a true statement. If n=2, then the solution is an ordered pair, and if n=3, it is an ordered triple. In general, an ordered n-tuple has the form (s1,s2,…,sn). A linear system is consistent if it has at least one solution. A linear system is inconsistent if it has no solutions.

#19

Find all values of k for which the given augmented matrix corresponds to a consistent linear system.

a. [1k−4482]  b. [1k−148−4]

Solution

a. Use R2→R2−4R1, adding −4 times row 1 to row 2:

[482]+[−4−4k16]=[08−4k18]

[1k−408−4k18]

Row 2 is the equation (8−4k)y=18. If 8−4k=0, that is, k=2, it says 0=18, which has no solution. For any other k we can divide by 8−4k, so the system is consistent.

Answer: k≠2

b. Use R2→R2−4R1 again:

[48−4]+[−4−4k4]=[08−4k0]

Then R2→14R2:

[1k−102−k0]

Row 2 is the equation (2−k)y=0, which y=0 always satisfies. So this is consistent for every k.

Answer: k∈ℝ (all real numbers)

Example

A 3-7-9 diet calls for 3 units of fat, 7 units of protein, and 9 units of carbs in each meal. Suppose an individual has three possible foods to choose from to meet these requirements. Each ounce of the food contains

Food 1: 3 units of fat, 4 units of protein, 1 unit of carbs
Food 2: 2 units of fat, 5 units of protein, 3 units of carbs
Food 3: 4 units of fat, 1 unit of protein, 2 units of carbs

Let x, y, and z denote the number of ounces of the first, second, and third foods that a person will consume at the main meal. Find a linear system in x, y, and z whose solution tells how many ounces of each food must be consumed to meet the diet requirements.

Solution

So x goes with Food 1, y with Food 2, and z with Food 3. Each nutrient gives one equation: the units from each food, times the ounces of that food, must add up to the requirement.

Fat: 3x+2y+4z=3
Protein: 4x+5y+z=7
Carbs: x+3y+2z=9

Answer: 3x+2y+4z=34x+5y+z=7x+3y+2z=9
